Camping - Kohler Andrae State Park, WI: June 2007

We recently took a week long camping trip to Kohler Andrae State Park near Sheboygan, Wisconsin about an hour north of Milwaukee. The park sits on Lake Michigan and has sand dunes that separate the campground from the lake and sand beach. The park is great for family camping with nice sites both shaded and wooded. There are miles of sand beach, a part of which is OK for dogs.
Be sure to check out the cord-walk trails (boards tied together sitting on the sand) that extend from the campground about 1 mile to the Nature Center and then another .6 miles over to the North Beach area.
The short Black River Marsh boardwalk extends out over the marsh area next to the campground. Take a visit in the Spring and you’ll have a good chance of seeing some of the sand hill cranes that nest there.
While Summer weekends in the park are generally busy, mid-week had more people than I expected but was nice and quiet. Early Spring and Fall are the best times to visit to beat the crowds but expect cold nights. Summer weather is great; lakeside is usually 10 degrees or so cooler than inland. Overall, it’s probably our favorite park for weekend camping (hey, it was our third trip here already this year!).
